Looking to Make Strides
Westies looking to improve in 2011-2012

West Haven girls’ hockey coach Carol Franco likes what she sees from her team already in the preseason. The coach likes the way the veterans are willing to lead.
If West Haven is to improve as the season progresses, those leaders are going to have to pave the way. This season’s leadership begins with senior co-captains Morgan Maliff and Jennifer Morrissey.
“Morgan is a senior who has been here since I started coaching here,” Franco said. “I have had her all four years. Morgan and Jennifer are solid players.”
Maliff will anchor Franco’s first line at center while Morrissey will do the same on the second line. The key for this year’s team will be to score more and Franco may have the team to do so.
“I think the key is the confidence in the girls,” Franco said as she enters her fourth season as head coach of the team. “We want to make something happen. All of the girls have something to bring to the table. They have to believe in that.”
Maliff will anchor a first line which will see sophomore Alyssa Woosley and junior Molly Long on the wings. The second line anchored by Morrissey will see sophomore Nicole Woosley at left wing and junior Samantha Young at right wing.
The third line is made up of two juniors and a senior. Junior Brittany Gould will center a line which will see Kristina Piper at left wing and junior Carly Brereton at right wing.
“We want to improve and score a little bit more,” Franco said. “We want to stay in the game. We want to be more aggressive in regards to back checking and fore checking. We want to win those little battles.”
Franco will rotate three defensemen in front of her two goalies. Juniors Alyssa Maddern and Julia Consorte along with sophomore Carly Crouse will anchor the defense. Crouse is a strong player and Maddern is a forward who has moved to play defense.
“I like that my strongest players are willing to carry the team,” Franco said. “I like the fact players like Alyssa Maddern, Carly Crouse and Julia Consorte are willing to help develop the rest of the team.”
Senior Kelsey Viani, who volunteered to go in net a year ago, returns to start between the pipes with sophomore Josy Militrano right behind.
