2016-2017 Winter Athletes of the Year

Veronica Lynn (66)

Sophomore

Girls Hockey

The West Haven girls hockey team had a season to remember this winter. Winning a Southern Connecticut Conference Division II title and advancing to the state tournament capped what was the best season in the history of the West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy hockey team.

The Westie Sharks had it all as it was a team which could score, play defense and receive solid goaltending. The key to the team was the overall defensive effort it put forth each game.

Leading the way was sophomore Veronica Lynn. Playing more than 35 minutes per game and anchoring the defense, Lynn was a key reason for the success of the Westie Sharks.

Lynn did it all for the Westie Sharks as she finished with seven goals and three assists, and more importantly, had 46 blocked shots.

For her efforts, Lynn was a First Team All-State selection, joining senior Gabi Prisco as the only two players in the history of the girls hockey program to be named All-State selections.

Pete Richetelli (8)

Senior

Boys Hockey

The West Haven boys hockey team entered the 2016-2017 not on the radar of many. By season's end, the Westies became a team no one wanted to play in the postseason.

Finishing with an impressive 14-6 regular season record, the Westies went on to win their first two state tournament games before falling in the semifinals against Ridgefield at Yale University's Ingalls Rink.

While there were many reasons and players who contributed to the team's success, one player stood out on a daily basis.

Senior Pete Richetelli capped his finest season in a West Haven uniform by leading the Westies in all three offensive categories. The senior finished the year with a team-leading 22 goals, 26 assists and 48 points.

Richetelli was such a dynamic force he recorded points in 19 of his team's 23 games, including two goals and three assists against Conard, one goal and three assists against East Haven, and three goals against Cheshire.

As a result of his hard work, Richetelli joined a select group in the history of the program as he was named to the the All-State team following the season.

2016 Fall Athletes of the Year

Gabi Prisco (20)

Senior

Girls Soccer

In a season in which West Haven had hopes of returning to the postseason, senior Gabi Prisco made sure her final campaign on the soccer field was a memorable one as she led her team to berths in both the Southern Connecticut Conference and state tournaments, and a 10-5-4 record.

All the senior did was lead the Westies in every offensive category, including 17 goals, 13 assists and 47 points.

Prisco had points in 12 of West Haven's 19 games and scored multiple goals in five of those contests. The senior scored four times against Cross, added another three against the Governors, and scored twice in each game against Foran, Bunnell and North Haven.

Anthony Godfrey (6)

Senior

Football

The West Haven football team had a regular season to remember, going undefeated with a 10-0 record and a berth in the postseason. While there were many weapons in the West Haven offense, Anthony Godfrey proved too tough for opponents to stop.

The senior was just too good for most teams as he finished the season with 1,769 yards rushing on 163 carries for an average of 10.9 yards per carry. Godfrey scored 28 touchdowns on the year, 23 on the ground and five through the air.

Godfrey also caught nine passes for 233 yards and finished the year with 168 points. What makes the numbers even more remarkable is the fact Godfrey did his work in a little over nine games as he missed the game against Fairfield Prep on Thanksgiving and was limited in the playoff loss to Ridgefield.

2016 Spring Athletes of the Year

Julia Bothwell
Senior
Softball
The 2016 softball team had clear goals to play in both the Southern Connecticut Conference and state tournaments this season. Senior Julia Bothwell helped make sure those goals were attained.
Whether it was in the pitching circle or at the plate, Bothwell was a main reason the Westies qualified for each.
In the circle, Bothwell led the team with nine wins, including the postseason-clinching victory over Hamden and winning the first round state contest against Glastonbury
At the plate, Bothwell was a force. The senior led the way with a team-leading 30 hits and 27 runs batted in.
Bothwell's best game on offense came at Shelton in the second game of the season as she had five hits, drove in four runs and scored twice.

Abdoul Aremu
Junior
Boys Track
The West Haven boys track team has had some brilliant moments this past season. The best may have come in the postseason.
While the team enjoyed success, no one had more individual success than junior Abdoul Aremu as he was named the Male Most Outstanding Performer in the Southern Connecticut Conference championship meet in May.
Aremu was part of the victorious 4 x100 team, a group which lost just once during the entire season. It was in that loss the group of Aremu, Talon Butler, Jeffrey Flores-Santiago and Andrew Highsmith set a school record in 43.27 seconds.
As he has done all season long, Aremu ran extremely well in the 100 and 200. In the SCC meet, Aremu was first in each, winning the 100 in 11.9 seconds and the 200 in 22.48 seconds.
In the SCC West Sectionals, Aremu was second in the 100, won the 200 and was part of the victorious 4 x 100 team once again.

2015-2016 Winter Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2015-2016 winter season, Tyler Paine (l.) and Gabi Prisco (r.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus/Westie Blue Male and Female Winter Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of Todd Dandelske.

Gabi Prisco
Junior
Girls Hockey
The 2015-2016 girls hockey team had a different look from the start. Merging with Sacred Heart Academy to form the West Haven/SHA girls hockey team, the Westies were a team which would go on to have their best season in recent memory.
West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy finished with a 10-10-2 record and came within a few minutes of taking home the Southern Connecticut Conference Division II crown.
While there were many reasons for the successful season, one player stood out throughout the season. That player is junior Gabi Prisco.
Prisco was among the team leaders in just about every category as she tied for the team lead in points with Lindsey Gerzabek as each had 18. Playing defense, Prisco was second on the team with 11 goals and second on the team with seven assists.
For the second straight season, Prisco was named to the All-State team as she remains the only female hockey player in West Haven history to place on this team.
For her efforts, Prisco was also named the SCC Division II Player of the Year.

Tyler Paine
Senior
Boys Hockey
Heading into the 2015-2016 season, Tyler Paine was well aware a lot was going to be expected of him. Coming off a solid season, Paine was going to be one of the players head coach Joe Morrell relied on the most.
Paine did not disappoint.  The junior finished the year on the All-State team and was a Southern Connecticut Conference Division I First team selection.
Paine was at the center of West Haven's scoring throughout the season as he lead the team in goals (18), assists (18) and points (36).
Paine had points in 14 of the team's 21 games, including scoring at least once in nine of those contests. The senior scored multiple goals in four games, including five goals and two assists in a win against East Haven, and three goals in another win against Cheshire.
Paine also had four assists in a win over North Haven as the Westies advanced to the opening round of the Division I state tournament before falling to Xavier.

2015 Fall Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2015 fall season, Amanda DiLeonardo and Salah Oumorou have been named the Vio's Sports Plus/Westie Blue Male and Female Fall Athletes of the Year.

Amanda DiLeonardo
Senior
Volleyball
The West Haven girls volleyball team enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent memory, advancing to the second round of both the Southern Connecticut Conference and state tournaments. One of the key reasons for the team's success was senior hitter Amanda DiLeonardo.
An SCC All-Quinnipiac selection, DiLeonardo was a force all over the court, leading the team in kills, aces and digs. A solid hitter, the senior had 181 kills and delivered 63 aces. If those were not enough, DiLeonardo was a solid defender, preventing opposing points with 176 digs. DiLeonardo also finished with 11 blocks on the season.
"Amanda has worked extremely hard and was a huge asset to our team this season," West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. "She is very deserving of this award."
DiLeonardo's two best performances of the season came in hard-fought victories.
In a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart Academy, DiLeonardo had 13 kills and 17 digs. In a 3-1 victory at Mercy, DiLeonardo was a force at the net with 17 kills and added five digs.

Salah Oumorou (15)
Junior
Boys Soccer
Often opposing teams will mark a top player with its defensive specialist. West Haven's Salah Oumorou saw his share of marks this season, but none deterred him.
Oumorou was so good teams often had multiple players flowing to him. In the end, it was Oumorou who came out on top.
The West Haven junior was nearly unstoppable, finishing with a team-leading 31 goals and 67 points as the Westies reached the Southern Connecticut Conference finals and the second round of the CIAC Class LL state tournament.
"Salah is a very special player, one that may come around once every 20 years," West Haven coach Pete Hamasian said. "He continues to get better every year."
Named the Southern Connecticut Conference Player of the Year, Oumorou was on a different level.
He scored multiple goals in nine different games, including four tallies twice, three goals three times and two goals four times.

2015 Spring Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2015 Spring season, Mike Savino (l.) and Kial Watts (r.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus / Westie Blue Male and Female Spring Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of WHHS.

Kial Watts
Senior
Softball
In a season which saw the Westies qualify for the postseason before falling in the opening round of the state tournament, one consistent player was Kial Watts.
Not only did the senior pitch in 17 games, she was a dominant force on top of West Haven's batting lineup. In 21 games, Watts hit .521, had a .580 on base percentage and an .817 slugging percentage.
Watts finished the season with 37 hits, including 19 singles, 15 doubles and three triples. The senior drove in 12 runs, scored 26 runs, drew nine walks and struck out just once in 81 plate appearances.
Watts also finished the season with a .934 fielding percentage.

Mike Savino
Senior
Baseball
Coming off a solid hockey campaign, Mike Savino was going to have a hard time topping his senior season on the ice. With an explosive bat, Savino may have done so.
In 21 games, Savino was a tough out as he finished with a .500 batting average, a .561 on base percentage and a .653 slugging percentage.
Savino had 36 hits in 72 at bats, including 27 singles, seven doubles and two triples. The senior drove in 15 runs, scored 29, and struck out only seven times in 82 plate appearances.
Defensively, Savino had 94 total chances, finishing with 58 assists and 28 put outs, while being a part of 14 double plays.

2014-2015 Winter Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2014-2015 Winter season, Gabi Prisco (second from r.), Brandon Sebastian (l.) Max Padro (second from l.) and Mike Savino (far r.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus/Westie Blue Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of WHHS.

Gabi Prisco
Sophomore
Girls hockey
In a season which saw the girls hockey team produce just three wins, a bright spot came in the form of sophomore Gabi Prisco.
Prisco, who was a regular on defense, but contributed mightily on offense, led the team with 19 goals, 7 assists and 26 points.
For her efforts, Prisco was named to the All-Southern Connecticut Conference Second Team and became the first player in school history to be named to the All-State First Team in girls hockey.
Prisco scored in 10 of her team's 20 games, scoring multiple goals seven times. Prisco, who was a force in both the offensive and defensive ends all season, scored four goals in a 9-3 win over Lauralton Hall.

Max Padro
Junior
Boys Swimming
Max Padro began swimming competitively at the age of nine. The results of all his hard work continue to pay off.
The West Haven junior became the first West Haven swimmer in school history to win a Class L state title, winning the 200 IM at the CIAC Class L final with a personal best and school record, 1 minute, 56.02 seconds.
Padro was not done as he also placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.93 seconds.
Placing in the top two in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly, Padro will see his name recognized as All-State selections in each.
As a sophomore, Padro broke records in the 100 butterfly, 200 IM and 500 freestyle, only to top his own marks this season.

Brandon Sebastian (c.)
Sophomore
Boys Indoor Track
Having already made a name for himself on the football field with an exceptional fall season, Brandon Sebastian was not to be silent in the winter campaign.
Participating on the boys indoor track team, Sebastian made all take notice, winning the New England Indoor Track Championship in the long jump event and qualifying for the Nationals.
The sophomore put forth a record-breaking performance, placing first in Boston, Mass., February 27, with a school record jump of 23 feet, 4 inches, easily eclipsing the previous school mark of 20 feet, 10 inches.
Sebastian qualified for the New England championship in February, placing second in both the CIAC Class LL Championship and the CIAC Indoor Track State Championship meet, both at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Mike Savino
Senior
Boys hockey
Coming into the 2014-2015 season, senior goaltender MIke Savino knew he would be a key player in the success of the team. Savino came up big time and time again.
The senior goaltender finished the season with 614 saves and a 92% save percentage. He was named to the All-SCC/SWC Division I First Team, All-State First Team and was named the Most Valuable Player in Division I.
While there were numerous contests in which Savino kept his team in the game, one will stand out for seasons to come.
In an opening round contest against Xavier in the Division I state tournament, Savino came within 9 seconds of carrying his team to an upset victory over the heavily favored Falcons.
The senior turned aside the first 44 shots he faced, most in spectacular fashion, before the Falcons tied the game in the final seconds and won in overtime.
Savino finished the year with three shutouts. He allowed one goal three times and two goals five times.

2014 Fall Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2014 Fall season, Gabi Prisco (r.) and Salah Oumorou (l.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus/Westie Blue Male and Female Fall Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of WHHS.

Gabi Prisco
Sophomore
Girls Soccer
In a season which ended in heartbreak, including gut-wrenching losses to Shelton (SCC) and Amity (state tournament), there were plenty of bright spots for the Westies. One of those bright spots was sophomore Gabi Prisco.
Following a freshman year which put the second-year star on the radar, Prisco continued to step forward. The sophomore continually came up big, finishing with 9 goals, which was second on the team, and a team-leading 12 assists and 30 points.
Marked by every team on a consistent basis, Prisco, a New Haven Register/GameTimeCt All-Area selection, showed her skills throughout the season, but never more so than in the first round of the state tournament against Amity.
With the Westies trailing by a goal in the second half, the sophomore ripped a curling shot from an angle which snuck under the crossbar into the top corner for the equalizer.
Then, with the season on the line in penalty kicks, Prisco never wavered. Calmly preparing for her turn, Prisco swiftly drilled a shot to the left corner to prolong the penalty kicks before West Haven eventually fell to the Spartans.
Also a standout lacrosse player, Prisco scored in seven of West Haven's games and had points in 12 of the team's 18 games.

Salah Oumorou
Sophomore
Boys Soccer
If ever first-year boys soccer coach Pete Hamasian needed to find a diamond in the rough, that diamond was Salah Oumorou.
Racing on to the scene as a sophomore, Oumorou surprised at first and impressed from there. Oumorou finished the season with a team-leading 23 goals and 50 points, while also adding four assists.
Oumorou had points in 12 games and scored multiple goals in 8 games this past season.
Ask an opposing coach what makes Oumorou a special player, all have to pause and think as there are many solid aspects of his game. Oumorou's footwork and ability to win in tight spaces separated him from most players throughout the year. Oumorou's vision of the field, terrific instincts and ability to score big goals played a huge part in his success.
Oumorou, the New Haven Register/GameTimeCt All-Area MVP and All-State selection, opened the season with three goals against Law and scored 4 times two games later against East Haven. When Oumorou scored twice against Hamden, the Westies opened the season at 5-0.
Oumorou added two more goals each against Sheehan, East Haven and Law in what would prove to be a special season for the dynamic sophomore.

2014 Spring Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2014 Spring season, Matt Carter (l.) and Ava Gambardella (r.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus / Westie Blue Male and Female Spring Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of WHHS.

Ava Gambardella
Senior
Girls' Lacrosse
In a season which saw plenty of thrilling moments for the girls' lacrosse team, Ava Gambardella may have been at the center of them all. Not only was the West Haven senior an emotional leader on the field, she was a leader where it mattered most - in the scoring column.
Gambardella finished the year with 62 points, including 50 goals and 12 assists. Of the 16 games the Westies played, Gambardella was in the scoring column in 15 of those contests.
Gambardella scored multiple goals 14 times, with 6 goals once, 5 goals 3 times 4 goals twice and 3 goals four times.
The senior helped West Haven get off to a 4-0 start with 4 goals and one assist in a 16-11 victory over Bunnell, scored 6 times and added an assist in a 19-15 win over North Haven and scored 5 goals in each of consecutive wins over Lyman Hall and North Haven.
Gambardella's biggest game may have come in the first meeting of the year against Sacred Heart Academy as her 5 goals and 2 assists, including the winner in overtime, helped West Haven qualify for the postseason.

Matt Carter
Senior
Baseball
The West Haven baseball team may have had several question marks entering the 2014 season, but senior Matt Carter was there to answer plenty of them.
Expected to be a key contributor, Carter did not disappoint. Whether it was offensively, defensively or on the pitching mound, Carter seemed to answer every challenge.
On the hill, Carter became the team's ace. The senior pitched 56.1 innings, finishing with a 5-3 record and 1 save. Carter allowed 41 hits and 20 runs, 17 of which were earned, while walking 35 and striking out 56.
The senior finished with an earned run average of 2.11 and a WHIP (Walks plus Hits per Innings Pitched) of 1.34.
Offensively, Carter was equally impressive, finishing with a .333 batting average with 23 hits. Carter finished with 18 singles, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 14 runs batted in and 15 runs scored. Carter finished with a .387 on base percentage and a .420 slugging percentage.
Carter was at his best down the stretch, including the postseason, as he tossed a complete game, 5-hitter, striking out 9 and walking 4 in a Class LL opening round victory over NFA. Just one day later, Carter came on in relief and got the Westies to extra innings before falling to Southington in the Class LL second round.
In the season's final week, Carter picked up a pair of victories. He tossed a 4-hitter in a 2-1 win over Career and four days later allowed just 5 hits and struck out 7 in an 8-2 win over Hand.

2013 - 2014 Winter Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2013 - 2014 Winter season, Mike Savino (l.) and Mya Berretta (r.) were named the Westie Blue Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Mya Berretta
Freshman
Girls' Hockey
If there were ever doubts of how good Mya Berretta would be this year, they were quickly erased when the freshman scored 13 goals in the first three games of the season.
Those goals were just a glimpse of what was to come. By the time the season was over, Berretta scored an astonishing 60 goals and finished with 68 points.
To put Berretta's season in perspective, West Haven played 18 games and Berretta failed to score in just one of those contests.
Berretta finished with 6 goals in a game three times, 5 goals in a game three times and 4 goals in a contest three times. There were also five times she scored twice in a game.
